Diversity and Inclusion in Cybersecurity

This past week, our amazing Senior Recruitment Consultant, Chrissy was fortunate enough to attend the Wonder Women Tech National Conference in Long Beach on behalf of Tiro Security. Wonder Women Tech is a non-profit organization that seeks to highlight, educate, and celebrate women and the underrepresented in STEAM industries (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math.) This year, the fourth annual conference featured the theme “#WeAreFuture” which refers to the organization’s focus on exploring opportunities for the future of work, innovation, STEAM, and humanity in regard to women representation.

The Diversity Issue

Chrissy attended the event as a Mentor and Resume Reviewer helping those in need at the “Hiring Humans Career Fair.” However, her assistance at the career fair goes beyond simply helping someone find a job. Her cooperation at the event displays a commitment to helping women who have been disproportionately represented in a multitude of industries, specifically the cybersecurity industry. According to research done by Fortinet.com, only 11% of the cybersecurity workforce is comprised of women. It is clear that gender bias is a prevalent issue in the cybersecurity industry since men are 9x more likely to hold managerial roles than women and experience 240% less discriminatory treatment than females. Despite this bias, there has been evidence of success with businesses that prioritize diversifying the workplace. According to further research, gender-diverse teams make better decisions 73% of the time versus 58% of the time for all-male teams. Venture capitalist (VC) funded, women-led teams bring in 12% higher revenue for their organizations than male-dominated VC firms do, while VC firms with at least one woman in a leadership position outperform all-male peer organizations by 63%. Therefore, the data supports the idea that women may bring different facets of skills to a workplace and underscores the importance of gender diversity. This prominent issue is especially important to us because this is a challenge that we have personally witnessed in the marketplace. That is why we cannot be more proud of Chrissy spearheading our team in tackling the diversity and inclusion challenges that many of our clients are currently facing.
